Legislators Punt on Transportation Budget/Mich. In One State Depression

State legislators finished the state budget one day before the start of the new fiscal year. The good news is there are no tax increases and Michigan will be able to draw down all of its available federal fuel tax dollars.

The bad news is this was done partially by borrowing with a $40 million short term note. To add insult to injury the Michigan legislature authorized the spending of hundreds of thousands of dollars on further study of construction of a new bridge to Canada. The current bridge is only somewhere between 25% and 33% capacity.

The 2012 state budget deficit is projected to be appoximately $1.6 billion. So I guess legislators figure what is another $40 million added on. Yes legislators did make some hard decisions but did not go nearly far enough.

No more excuses from our elected leaders. Michigan is in a one-state depression. Reform and change must be the order of the day for 2012.
