Statewide TV ad Blasts Granholm on no-tax pledge
Broken Promise” ad begs governor to protect Michigan families during tough economic times

LANSING — Fearing that Michigan’s $3 billion budget deficit will be balanced on the backs of Michigan taxpayers, Americans for Prosperity-Michigan today unveiled a TV ad reminding Gov. Jennifer Granholm of her repeated promise not to raise taxes on Michigan families.

“Now is the worst time to reach into the pockets of Michigan families to fix the state’s budget mess,” said Scott Hagerstrom, state director for Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. “The ‘Broken Promise’ ad reminds the governor that she promised Michigan families she wouldn’t raise their taxes. She shouldn’t break her word just because times are tough.”

“Broken Promise” will run in the Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids markets, cable TV markets throughout the state, and can be seen at www.NoMiTaxHike.com. It highlights Granholm’s 2008 State of the State address, where she promised “no new fees, no new taxes.” The Governor has repeated that promise on several occasions, including in the Detroit News (Dec. 23, 2008) and Escanaba Daily Press (Aug. 22, 2009). Also featured are pleas from Michigan residents speaking out against another tax hike.

AFP-Michigan is urging legislators to protect Michigan families during the recession and vote against tax hikes on any Michigan resident.  The governor has recently floated proposals to raise taxes on soft drinks, bottled water, entertainment, beer and tobacco.

“Raising taxes is not the way to solve the budget crisis or revitalize Michigan’s economy,” Hagerstrom said.

AFP-Michigan is an organization of 20,000 members committed to economic growth, fiscal restraint and greater taxpayer control over government. The group supports programs that promote self-reliance and minimize the role of government.
